Four Foods on Friday #37

We're having a party this week for Four Foods -- in honor of Val's son's Birthday #9! Be sure to drop by Fun, Crafts and Recipes and wish him Hippo Birdday!

1. Cake. Buttercream, whipped cream or ice cream?
Yes, yes, oh yes. I've done it all, and lived to tell. Max loves dinosaurs, so early on, I bought a dinosaur cake pan, and we've had T-Rex cakes for about every second year, always red velvet for realism. He's also had ice cream cakes several years, which were fun, and my last birthday, I did the angel food, strawberries and whipped cream conglomeration.

#2. When entertaining do you use real, paper, plastic or styrofoam dishes?
Depends on the group. Max's posse, paper. My family, big to little, paper or styrofoam. A small group of dinner party adults, I get out the Portmeirion, or use the everyday reals.

#3. When hosting a party do you cook, have it catered or go to a restaurant?
I usually cook, with some possible additions from local catering. The mom-and-pop grocery by the house does a wicked brisket, so I might get that and add side dishes and salad and dessert, or get a wild dessert from the bakery and do the rest myself.

#4. Share a recipe that you frequently serve when having a party.
I like hummus, so I usually make some for any get-together. it's a great ice-breaker, because everyone has to try at least a dip - equalizes the garlic breath level of the party. I take a can of chickpeas, a garlic clove, smashed, juice of a lemon, a TBS of sesame oil (instead of tahini, adds less fat), a TBS of olive oil, 1 to 2 tsp of cumin, 1/2 tsp oregano, a little chicken broth for additional moisture if needed. All of that goes into the food processor with a dash or two of Tabasco and process until smooth. A festive touch I've discovered is adding a can of artichoke hearts, drained and lightly chopped. YUM.
